Walkthrough Film or Drone Footage: Which Does Your Property Need?
Most vacation rentals and venues need the inside shown before the outside, so a walkthrough film is usually the better first step. Drone footage is worth adding when the land, the water or the setting is the main reason people book. At Legacy Luxury Media, the walkthrough film is $450 flat and made from the listing photos you already have, with no shoot day and no crew.
What each one actually shows
A walkthrough film moves a guest through the property the way they would walk it on arrival: the exterior, the main living space, the kitchen, the bedroom that sells the stay, the pool or the view. It answers the question guests have when they scroll a listing, which is what it will feel like to be inside.
Drone footage is filmed from the air. It is good at scale and context: how big the grounds are, how close the property sits to the beach or the lake, what the mountains look like behind it. It rarely shows the rooms, because a drone is built to fly outdoors.
What a drone shoot involves
Aerial footage means someone has to be at the property with a drone on a day with good weather and good light. In the United States, the FAA says flying a small drone for work or business is covered by its Part 107 rules, which call for a Remote Pilot Certificate and a registered drone. Some places, such as areas near airports, need extra authorization before anyone can fly (FAA, Certificated Remote Pilots including Commercial Operators).
None of that is a reason to skip aerial footage. It just means a drone shoot is a production day, with the scheduling, travel and editing that come with one. We covered what drives those costs in How Much Does a Property Walkthrough Video Cost?
What a walkthrough film from your photos involves
Legacy Luxury Media never comes on site. You send 8 to 12 of your listing photos, and they become a 60 to 90 second hero film in 1080p, plus vertical cuts for Reels and TikTok. The first draft arrives within 72 hours of receiving your photos, and one revision is included.
The film is directed from your real photos, so the light, color and layout stay true to what you shot. No rooms are invented. If your photos are too weak to carry a film, you hear that before you pay.
When the walkthrough film should come first
- The interior is the draw. Design, finishes, a great kitchen or a bedroom with a view are things guests book on, and they are inside.
- Your photos are already strong. If the listing photos are good, a film can be made from them without blocking dates for a shoot.
- You manage several properties. The cost and effort are the same for each one, so it is easier to keep every listing consistent.
- You want motion on the listing soon. There is no weather window or crew to wait on.
When drone footage is worth adding
- The setting is the product. Waterfront homes, vineyards, ranches and estates with large grounds often sell on what surrounds them.
- Guests need to understand the layout. Event venues with several spaces, such as a barn, a lawn and a ceremony site, can be easier to explain from above.
- Location is a selling point. Showing how close the property is to the shore or the slopes can do what a sentence in the description cannot.
For these properties, a walkthrough film and aerial footage are not competing choices. The walkthrough shows the stay, and the aerial shows where it is.
A simple way to decide
Ask what your best guests mention first in reviews or inquiries. If it is the house, the rooms or the details, start with the inside. If it is the view, the land or the location, aerial footage deserves a place too. Either way, you can see how your own photos look as a film before spending anything by asking for a free teaser of about 15 seconds made from 3 to 4 photos.

Frequently asked questions
Is a walkthrough film the same as drone footage?
No. A walkthrough film from Legacy Luxury Media moves through the property itself, room by room, and is made from 8 to 12 of your existing listing photos. Drone footage is filmed from the air and mostly shows the outside: the roofline, the grounds and what surrounds the property.
Does Legacy Luxury Media fly drones?
No. Legacy Luxury Media never comes on site. The walkthrough film is made from the photos you already have, so there is no shoot day, no crew and no travel.
What does hiring a drone operator involve?
Someone has to come to the property and fly. In the United States, the FAA says flying a small drone for work or business falls under its Part 107 rules, which require a Remote Pilot Certificate and a registered drone. Some locations, such as areas near airports or flights at night in controlled airspace, also need extra authorization.
Which should I get first?
If guests are deciding based on what the inside feels like, start with a walkthrough film, because the rooms are what they book. If the land, the water or the setting is the main reason people book, aerial footage may matter more, and the two can work together.
How much does the walkthrough film cost?
The walkthrough film is $450 flat, made from 8 to 12 photos and delivered in 1080p. You can see a free teaser of about 15 seconds made from 3 to 4 of your photos before you pay.
